All too often when we do initial SEO reviews of websites for companies who have asked us for a quotation we find that work done by a previous SEO firm has harmed the site. Sometimes the company is aware of the problem and that’s why they’ve come to us so we can fix it. Sometimes they have no idea, they just know they should be getting more search traffic than they get.
Sadly, there are a lot of very disreputable SEO firms out there, but there’s also a lot of very good ones. Bad SEO can harm a site irreparably whereas good SEO can vastly increase your profit so it is essential that companies looking for an SEO firm spend a little time learning the basics of SEO so they’ll know whether they’re being given accurate information.
There is a lot of misinformation about SEO on the internet and if you're looking to hire an SEO consultant, you probably don’t have time to do a lot of research to find out which sites are the ones the professionals trust. Instead, have a look at what the major search engines tell you about what webmasters should and should not do:
Yahoo Search Content Quality Guidelines
MSN Live Search Guidelines for Successful Indexing
If an SEO firm recommends something that sounds like it violates any of these guidelines, or if they tell you something that these guidelines recommends is not important, ask them why and consider their answers very carefully.
