Social Media has without a doubt become a global phenomenon, and for many businesses represents a new way to target customers.

As the majority of people are rushing to communicate and share their opinions and experiences with people via social networking sites, it should come as no surprise that brands are also getting online.

Social Media: May 2011 Statistics

A recent study from ComScore, based on US social media users, found the number of people using social networking to be at an all time high.

The overall conclusion of the study discusses how social media has become a large part of users' daily lives, as 1 in every 6 minutes spent online is used for social media purposes.

The results show that the majority of users flock to Facebook. The statistics from ComScore demonstrated that Facebook hit their highest peak of visitors in May 2011 in reaching 157.2 million visitors, which was an increase of 3.2 million visitors compared to April 2011.

However the overall explosion of social media usage has seen several other networking sites rise to a new high in terms of percentage of overall users. The top three with the highest percentage include:

  • LinkedIn: With 33.4 million registered in May 2011, LinkedIn saw a 58% growth from May 2010 to May 2011.
  • Twitter: With a 13% growth in May 2011 compared to May 2010, Twitter has over 27 million visitors.
  • Tumblr: Saw the largest increase in users from May 2010 to May 2011, Tumblr now has 10.7 million visitors which have resulted in a 166% growth.

Companies & Social Media

From e-commerce to recruitment to legal sites, the effect of social media has impacted on many companies as they are now beginning to incorporate Facebook (and other social media) logos into their websites and advertising campaigns.

An example of this can be seen within the Tetley Tea brand, which launched its latest promotional campaign to bring back the nostalgic Tetley Tea Folk through a series of promotional campaigns across their site and advertising, all of which were designed to influence their users to communicate with, and ‘like’ them via Facebook.

Good blog Tim. Social Media is the definately the future in my industry (Recruitment) and linkedin in particular is becoming more important by the day. It's changing the way we communicate and therefore the way we recruit. I recently bloged about this on the Core Talent website: http://www.coretalent.co.uk/blog/does-social-media-spell-the-end-for-job-boards/
